Problem with excerpts

    I have problem with displaying post excerpts. Instead I get only frist 55 words of the post.
    I need to show the excerpt, if it exists, or the first 55 words (or less) of the post as the excerpt in home page and category pages.
    Is there a way to display proper excerpts in cower wp theme?
